Alternative and complementary medicine as options

According to the WHO, alternative or complementary medicine refers to a group of healthcare practices not typically part of conventional medical systems. Examples include acupuncture, homeopathy, herbalism, and chiropractic care. Some oriental countries have a long-standing tradition of using alternative medicine for centuries, often incorporating it into daily routines or as a complementary approach to conventional treatments.

Why is it used, and is it effective?

There are many questions surrounding complementary medicine, and given the variety of options available, it’s only reasonable that we explore as much as possible in this post. Keep an eye out for future posts for more detailed discussions.

Now, why do people turn to it? Often, the use of complementary medicine is driven by the need to manage pain. Non-conventional methods provide a nearly risk-free alternative to alleviate pain when traditional medicine is either unsuitable or ineffective for some individuals.

Other benefits of complementary therapies include:

  • Alleviating side effects of cancer treatments such as nausea, pain, and fatigue.
  • Reducing stress related to cancer.
  • Providing palliative care.

Types of alternative – complementary medicine:

Since 1989, The American Holistic Health Association in the United States has recognized eight principal forms of alternative medicine, which we will discuss today: Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic and naturopathic medicine; homeopathy, osteopathy, chiropractic, behavioral medicine, and massage therapy.

1. Chinese Medicine: This ancient practice has been used for thousands of years to prevent, diagnose, and treat illnesses. It revolves around the concepts of qi and chi, which are believed to flow through the body along pathways called meridians, maintaining balance in spiritual, emotional, and physical health. The goal of this form of complementary medicine is to restore harmony and balance between the natural yin and yang forces, thereby unblocking the qi that causes disease. Treatments include acupuncture, dietary therapy, herbal therapy, exercise, and massages.

2. Homeopathy: This clinical-therapeutic model utilizes vitamins and substances derived from plants, animals, and minerals in low concentrations, dissolved in water and alcohol. It aims to balance metabolism through a healthy diet and complementary exercise, while strengthening the body’s own healing capabilities. There are some risks associated with homeopathy, such as potential effects on organ function if taken in large quantities, which is why it is administered in small doses. Developed around 200 years ago by the German Samuel Hahnemann, homeopathy faces criticism and skepticism from some studies that question its efficacy and label it as ineffective.

3. Chiropractic: This is a manual therapy where practitioners use their hands to manipulate the spine and other parts of the body. Techniques also include the application of ice and heat to relax the body. Chiropractic primarily addresses back and neck pain, headaches, and other musculoskeletal issues, including those affecting the hands and feet. It was first proposed in the late 19th century by David Daniel Palmer in Iowa.

It’s crucial to remember that each type of alternative or complementary medicine has its advantages and disadvantages. Before deciding, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional and conduct thorough research.
